The telecommunication industry has shown strong dynamism, rapid growth and major restructuring which have changed the global landscape. In 2005, a financial transaction of about €13 bn shook the Italian market: Mr. Sawiris, the owner of Orascom Telecom, an Egyptian company, acquired WIND, which is one of the Italian emerging companies.
Why does the Egyptian businessman move from prosperous and uncompetitive markets, to join a new one with little possibility to be further penetrated, and where western tycoons indisputably dominate? Is the Orascom acquisition of Wind a short term speculative investment or does it represent part of an industrial plan ? The author's ambition is to answer these challenging questions, founding his achievements on the Foreign Direct Investment theory.

Author info and background

Guido Pecchia was born in Anzio (RM) in 1972, graduated in Electronic Engineer at the University of Rome La Sapienza in 1998, and took a Master of Business Administration at the University of Malta, Link Campus, in 2006. Presenting a thesis on “Foreign Direct Investment: the Orascom - Wind acquisition case”. He started his professional career in the Telecommunication environment at Infotel Italia as System Engineer, developing thorough expertise in designing services for fixed and mobile (GSM, GPRS and UMTS) networks. Since 2004, he is working for Ericsson, first in the role of Technical Team Leader, managing a team that develop, implement and test telephone services on TLC network nodes, and currently as Strategy & Marketing Manager.
