The book which you happen to be looking at fills a void in what has become the vast phenomenon of  Science and Technology Parks (STPs).  Its author has all the right requisites and the necessary competence to be able to approach this topic which is universally recognized as being extremely complex and composite.  Calcagno combines a sound and highly sophisticated background in the scientific field with a profound knowledge of the business aspects of technological innovation in its numerous forms.  It takes someone with a PhD in Naval Engineering and an MBA to delve into the manifold implications of STPs.  Though these have long been around, nobody before has taken the bother to examine the existing examples to identify trends and models which could help understand what has worked and what has failed.  Guido Calcagno has explored the world of STPs with the resolve of the inveterate explorer and has provided us with a map, or chart if you wish, of the sector which shareholder and stakeholders are advised to look at before endeavouring into new missions in potentially treacherous waters where many attempts have failed or have only partly succeeded.  There are no cut-and-dry solutions in Calcagno’s words.  Nevertheless, governments, industries and research centres can now find in this book the guidance that they need to improve the management and governance of existing STPs, as well as of any future ones, no matter where they might be geographically located or the nature of their ownership.

Author info and background 

Guido Calcagno: currently lives in Brussels working at the European Commission in the Directorate General for Transport and Energy as policy officer in the maritime transport policy and maritime safety Unit.  He has a vast experience and knowledge in the transport sector, both technical and economic, as well as in the mode of operation and policies of the EU.Graduated in Aeronautic Engineering at the University of Rome "La Sapienza", Ph.D. in Naval Engineering at the University of Trieste, he worked for many years as researcher at the INSEAN - The Italian Naval Hydrodynamic Research Institute, conducting research and innovation for the efficiency and the safety of ships and marinesystems. He holds an MBA from the University of Malta - Link Campus and he's involved in issues related to business follow-ups and knowledge dissemination of industrial application of scientific research. He has particular interests in management of research and innovation, knowledge economy and technology transfer plus a wide experience in management and governance of science and technology parks.He has taught in several Universities as well for private companies in the aviation and in the naval sector.
